I used to own the whole series on Bluray, but I sold it off last year after watching it for the final time, Having rewatched the show several times over the years, it becomes more clear that story wise, the writers (Moore and Eick) really had no clue what they were doing by around the end of season 1. The show really needed a roadmap and a "Bible" (like Babylon 5) before shooting began. Also I think some of the grounded Military tech (like bullets as opposed to some sort of energy based weapons) and nerfing the Cylons (just how they did the Cylons in general) hurt the show, alot.

Look, When Fasa created them, It was just a unique concept and as you said Sci Fi. I piloted one. It has advantages and the garbage can is a fan based idea. Instead of beating a dead tree, understand it was fun while it was available. Yes they got in trouble but I loved it. Mine was my own. So the advantage was flying in, jump out of range and back in.

...I think the Black Marauder is the result of Void experimentation by the Star League, and it's monsterous appearance is due to the fact that it was merging with Biomatter to become more... Alive. Add in the fact that Langstrom had demanded the location of Star league era maps and location data, it implies that it was looking for the means to teleport to areas that 'Interest' it. Langstrom was likely considered the "Perfect Vessel" for the machine, and had served as it's mouth. Once it got what it wanted from the Pirates and whatever it was looking for, it fused with Langstrom as he had served his purpose and the two became one unit... I do not know if there was anything left of Langstrom by that point, but it does give reason why it has a habit of targeting warriors... Seeing as it notably "Hunts" for the best warriors available. I mean, it notably tears apart "Inferior Mechs" and Warriors, as if it doesn't give a hoot as to keeping anything valuable intact, but when it finds a _highly_ skilled warrior, it is more... delicate in how it gets to its prey, almost like it wants the "Meat" to be largely intact, such as how it "Plucked out" the Star Captain from his Summoner, almost as if it just ripped off the summoner's arms, held the mech in place and then carefully opened the canopy hatch and 'slurped out' the pilot with a distressing amount of nimbleness before closing the canopy afterwards. Add in it's flair for the dramatic, and it seemed to imply it did that to bamboozle the ones who have to deal with the aftermath. It also seems to have a taste for Cruelty... Seeing as it manifests whenever there is sheer cronic cruelty or atrocities committed on the battlefield or region, almost like it is "called" by the blood of innocents spilled... So in a sense, it is like a living force of Karma, you commit sheer acts of cruelty for no reason, you will call the Black Marauder to your location.

A side effect of the Neurohelmets is that it isn't just sensation, it's full proprioception. The 'Mech IS your body. Your eyes can see a butterfly flap its wings from a mile away, your ears can hear a pin drop from across a city, and your arms can move the world. In short, you're a god of war stomping through a world of cardboard. And that feeling is addictive. MechWarriors essentially develop self-induced species dysmorphia. They see themselves as their 'Mech just as much as their meat-body, if not more. They start to have trouble empathizing with mortal men, because their "true form" is so much greater. So keep that in mind, and then realize that every House Lord is, by necessity, a seasoned MechWarrior, and you start to understand why they act so crazy. It isn't 80s camp, they're just all literal sociopaths.

It’ll be an arms race. A sensor friendly environment with no horizon is probably going to lead to viciously effective point defenses. The evolutionary counter for missiles to overcome this is bomb pumped lasers, high velocity flachets, and lots of electronic warfare. In other words, standoff distance and obfuscation. In a no drag environment, well timed chaff could easily conceal missiles and screw with point defense targeting is some situations - especially when missiles are coasting in behind and not burning at all points. There’s absolutely nothing subtle or sneaky about a cloud of high velocity chaff with a bunch of missiles and decoys lurking behind it, ready to burn like hell for the terminal approach once point defense fire starts getting dangerous. And it doesn’t have to be to elegant to work.

One detail I love in HBS's Battletech game is that the Argo has both a Boxing ring and a bunch of simpods. Both get used by MechWarriors to deal with stress by smacking around each other under the guise of competition and training. Got a minor noble and an ex-Solaris gladiator that are the top two in the merc group's little boxing league.

Stargate has a lot of problems to go with its good points most of which are its good guy and bad guy factions being ludicrously old, arrogant and unhelpful. by season 3 i was more angry at the Asgard for being terrible "protectors" then the Gould for being stupid villains. the Asgard are the worst "good guys" in sci-fi. instead of uplifting humans and giving them a chance to fight on their own they did the same as the Goa'uld and forced the "free" tribes to worship them even if it was as benevolent gods. And THE ONE PLANET that could stand any real chance of fighting on its own Earth was basically left to the mercy of at least 3 world ending attacks just because they didn't "technically" brake the absurd one sided treaty. OH and they let us wander around smashing into whatever was out there without ANY warnings or guidence. Would love t see a TOS Cylon Basestar run into these "chariots" of false gods.

My head canon is that the lore reason for opt-in/opt-out quircks comes from the brand of the tech being installed in the mech. Like the company that is standard for providing the Federated Suns with their ACs is of lower quality (but not enough to be considered non-cost effective, typical case of lowest bidder that still gets the job done) while other manufacturers in other regions might produce better or worse quality and independant groups like a merc lance might have versions from multiple suppliers due to contract/salvage awards. So why would a mechtech ever swap a superior model for an inferior one? Maintenance. There may be no surplus of a superior model but they have an op coming up that the maintenance of the system will overshoot. Swap out the better but battered system for the serviced but slightly (or greatly) worse version so you have at least "something" to bring to the battlefield, an underperforming system is still better than no system at all.

as someone who watched the OG BSG when it was first aired, yes i am old, and someone who love s the original run it would be dishonest to say that the 70's disco scifi series wasnt cheesy and cringe in many ways when looked at from the lens of almost 50 years later. it is still a beautiful classic design that evokes the nostalgia of the OG series. any kid at the time wanted to be launched out the fighter bay in a viper and blow toasters into atoms. It is a design that still looks better IMHO than the jupiter class design from the reboot, dont get me wrong i loved that version too but the OG BSG will always be the GOAT.

My. favorite loadout is a Marauder II with 2 ER medium lasers, replace the 2 PPCs with 2 ER Large Lasers, and an ER PPC on the back. Slightly less alpha damage but the heat tradeoff means more Alpha strikes before overheating plus weight saved for more armor/heatsinks. Slap in jump jets and step aside Thor, there's a new God of Thunder and Lightning!!!
